A plane might get you there quicker, but nothing beats the experience of driving across the United States—it’s truly iconic.
Visit some of the most well-known cities in the nation while getting up close and personal with its most breathtaking landscapes, such as windswept plains, dramatic Pacific coastlines, dense eastern forests, and red rock canyons.
Amazingly, driving across the United States is a breeze thanks to its vast and generally well-kept network of highways. Travelling by vehicle allows you to take on additional side quests as you go, and while some distances may be long, supplies like gas, food, and lodging are usually easy to come by (with the exception of some very rural areas).
In this article, we will share some of our favourite ways to traverse the vast landscapes of the United States, as well as some suggestions for how to maximise your time on the road.
The Pacific Coast Highway
Connecting major West Coast cities, quirky beach towns in California, old redwood forests, and the breathtaking Northwest capes and pools, the Pacific Coast Highway offers one of the most iconic road trip experiences in the United States. The route begins in San Diego and follows the coast through Los Angeles, Big Sur, San Francisco, and Redwood National & State Parks before ending in Seattle. It includes Highway 1, Highway 101, and I-5.

Blue Ridge Parkway
View after view of verdant mountains teeming with charming hiking paths, thundering waterfalls, ancient rock formations, and abundant wildlife awaits you as you make your way along this breathtaking route through the centre of the oldest mountain range in the United States. The Parkway, which is a component of the National Park Service system, starts next to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and ends at the southern entrance of Shenandoah National Park after having passed through several state parks and recreation areas, Roanoke, Virginia, and the breathtaking Pisgah National Forest.
Route 66
Route66, sometimes called the Mother Road, is an iconic symbol of the United States and a must-visit for any traveller. The route begins in Chicago and winds its way through eight states, introducing visitors to national parks, quirky but charming roadside attractions, and a treasure trove of vintage Americana.
Natchez Trace
Buffalo that ranged from central Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi, laid the first tracks that would later become the Natchez Trace. The path was subsequently transformed into a fully operational thoroughfare for European colonists, troops, and dignitaries; it was subsequently followed by indigenous traders and hunters. Taking a journey along the Trace today will reward you with breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and the opportunity to travel one of the most legendary roads in the nation.
Florida Highway 1
Highway 1 in Florida begins at Miami and winds its way east along the Atlantic coast until it reaches the breathtaking town of Key West. Visit historic St. Augustine, Canaveral National Seashore, Nascar-fueled Daytona, laid-back Fort Lauderdale, and the glitz and glamour of Miami and South Beach on this magnificent multi-day journey through a plethora of Florida’s most iconic landmarks.
